Sunny's Film Review - The Da Vinci Code
Woke up Friday morning, on the 19th of May 2006 - and all I was thinking was the most talked about movie on the news, radio and other means of advertising (bill-boards as well). The Da Vinci Code. I was given the opportunity to be one of the very first individuals in the UK to see it first hand.
I never read or saw the book so my expectation level was highly aroused by abundant curiosity. I made sure I got big popcorn and coca cola and waited watching the various adverts of upcoming movies such as Omen, X-men - the list goes on. The title of the movie `THE DA VINCI CODE` appeared on screen showing the starring cast. At last the movie I`ve been waiting for. This was like wow.
The start of the movie was very interesting causing a whole lot of suspense as a priest is killed by an unknown monk in cold blood. Whilst the priest is bleeding as he seeks a confined space for medical attention as I thought it was the case, the scene is diverted to a completely different scene with the main character `Tom Hanks` teaching as a professor in a college or university. He was describing different symbolic objects stating their proper meaning. Judging by the first two scenes, I thought this must be one of those movies where you have a group of character seeking a relic of some kind in a far a way land. So I thought um an adventure because I did not know about the movie.
Then all of a sudden the same monk who had just shot the priest a few minutes ago is kneeling in front of a carved cross which Jesus is nailed to, with lighted candles surrounding the little space which looked more like an altar for ritualistic purposes. The moment this monk the murderer is speaking in a strange language, my initial thoughts was he must be a devil worshipper of some kind or occultist. Then a few minutes after this thought, this monk ties some kind of metal chain around his leg which resulted into a really disgusting open wound. At this point I felt really disgusted because this monk the murderer just killed a priest and now is inflicting a serious injury to damage his thigh. If that was not enough, he stood up, said some recitations, picked up a dangerous looking whip and flogged himself therefore crying out loud in pain. The scene is changed back to `Tom Hanks` handing out autographs on his newly released novel. The previous scene shocked me to bits as it reminded me of `the Passion of Christ` where Jesus was flogged terribly to coma by the soldiers which shocked me even more.
The start of the movie was extraordinary, I felt so good, there was nothing more than to start a movie with suspense, action and adventure it had this wow factor. The introductory part of the movie was indeed special. However I began to question certain religious elements that were mentioned towards the end part. Apparently Mary Magdalene is appeared to have been present during the Passover feast beside Jesus. Secondly, it was mentioned that Jesus and Mary were both married and Mary was pregnant at the time of his crucifixion. From my point of view, the religious content I would say was irrelevant as it did not correspond with the movie plot. The end part was interesting as one of the characters found out that she was the last descendant of Jesus. It was rather confusing. I would say because the end of the movie should have had some sort of text written finish. This is because for me it did not make any sense whatever ending a movie without us as spectators knowing the full detailed explanation of events. This is to my understanding how movies are meant to finish with the viewers fully satisfaction of a remarkable end. Overall it was a brilliant picture, lots of twists and turn which was great and all the cast performing brilliantly. It is a movie to watch I tell you folks. Frabjous!
