Profile of Martha

Martha

Martha Nelson is the Sunday School Superintendent and a stalwart of the Women's Fellowship and weekly prayer meeting at Dalston church. However, her Christian life doesn't begin and end with the church. She is also actively involved in the local community.

Every alternate Monday afternoons, she volunteers with the Community Resource Team from home to facilitate a telephone conference link-up between elders. This befriending service is used by people ranging in age from 70s to 90s. Despite living with difficulties and challenges, the group can be lively. She tries to hold it together when everyone is speaking at the same time. She enjoys it though and speaks fondly of the people who have become friends by telephone every fortnight.

It doesn't stop there. She volunteers at a social event for the over 50s twice a month in Stoke Newington. This is also with the Community Resource Team. She works on the door and helps people to socialise.

If you thought that was enough for anyone, two months ago Martha started to go into a local primary school every week in Dalston. She helps children from seven years old upwards for two hours with their reading. By giving one to one support, she is a great role model for the younger generation.

This is all part of Martha's Christian life. She says, "God can do anything for us" and she uses the strength she receives from God to help others in the community.
